The Civil Partnerships, Marriages and Deaths (Registration etc) Act 2019 (CPMD 2019) will come into force on 26 May 2019 following Royal assent being given on the 26th March 2019. This will mean that opposite sex couples may also enter into a civil partnership.

The changes in the law relating to Civil Partnerships follows the Supreme Court’s decision in Steinfeld and Keidan v Secretary of State for International Development (in substitution for the Home Secretary and the Education Secretary) [2018] UKSC 32. In that case a heterosexual couple wanted to be able to enter into a Civil Partnership and argued why this should be allowed.
